Life in Stills: struggle for Tel Aviv Weissensteins photo shop [edited]

Life in Stills: struggle for Tel Aviv Weissensteins photo shop [edited]

During the 13th. Docaviv Film Festival, I was at the premiere (May 16th.) of the documentary: Life in Stills, directed by Tamar Tal and produced by Barak Heymann. It is the emotional story of Miriam Weissenstein (during the shootings: 96 years old) and her grandson Ben in their struggle for their Pri-Or Photo Shop at Allenby 30. Photographer Rudi Weissenstein opened his shop in 1940. I think every Telavivian knows this famous shop with the large … Read entire article »

Entrances of Tel Aviv buildings by photographer France Lebee-Nadav

Entrances of Tel Aviv buildings by photographer France Lebee-Nadav

I did found an awesome article in ‘Haaretz Magazine’ written by Dalia Karper: ‘Lovable Anarchy’ about France Lebee-Nadav who did photograph for 20 years the entrances of Tel Aviv buildings - that no-man’s land that belongs to the yard and the street. “You don’t find spaces like this anywhere else” says France Lebee-Nadiv… Not even in her city of birth, Paris. [building entrances of the Moriem House, at Druyanov Street 1, designed by Reuben Mitelman (1938). Photo's by Frits … Read entire article »

Tel Aviv is burning

No, there is no need to call the fire department, but if you have been here in Tel Aviv the last few weeks, you probably have felt that hell came down to visit. This Friday noon I hang out with a friend in Neve Tzedek. I’m used to the fact that in summer there is less traffic  (Israeli’s do travel), but both me and my friend were a little surprised to see only a small amount of people in the streets, many of them being French tourists. Even the  coffee shops were not very occupied. It seems that we, the rough and tough Israelis were defeated by the sun. So, if you are like me, a sweat hater, here are some ideas for cool hiding places (sorry, malls are not here … Read entire article »

Tel Aviv Centennial Picture – part 3

The surrounding festivities at the old ‘Manshia’ train station today, April 17th, were just wonderful. Actors were dressed-up in clothes of the beginning of 1900, there were free ‘Gazoos‘ drinks (soda with a very sweet syrup), old Jazz music and of course a speech by mayor Ron Huldai. Also good-old ‘Chich‘ (Shlomo Lahat) was at the party. He was mayor of Tel Aviv from 1974 until 1993. … Read entire article »
