Highrise towers in Neve-Tsedek

I am very ‘happy’ with the article by Raz Smolsky and Guy Liberman: “The towers of Tel Aviv” in Ha’aretz (June the 5th). It was time that also the daily newspapers in Israel would write about those ugly highrise around the beautiful neighborhood of Neve-Tsedek. Those ‘empty‘ towers are build for the rich French and Americans, who will ‘visit‘ their million $ apartments during the Jewish holidays. It is a crying shame: they are building a ‘wall‘ around Neve-Tsedek!!! Maybe, this time we can stop them?! Inhabitants of Neve-Tsedek tried before, even in long court battles…so, for those new ugly plans by the Municpality of Tel Aviv, we should start again a strong grass-roots movement(!!) : “Save Neve-Tsedek, Stop those ugly high-rise!!” … Read entire article »

The first color film of Tel Aviv

Herewith the first color film of Tel Aviv, made by an English soldier in the beginning of 1930. On the film (more then 4 minutes) you will see the building-work on the first white Bauhaus-buildings, Herzl Street and the Gymnasium-Herzliya, that was brutally ‘torn down’ by the municipality of Tel Aviv, Allenbey Street, the first Muncipality building on Bialik Square, some nice shots of Tel Aviv beach with the famous ‘Kadar’ -restaurant (a long time ago ‘destroyed’) and the fantastic Mugrabi Cinema on the corner of Allenbey- and Ben-Gurion Street, that was ‘pulled- down’ (this crime was done by 3 CAT-buldozers) in December 1995 and this spot, is until today..a ‘bloody’ parking place!! A crying shame !! The famous rock-singer Arik Einstein said once: “..the Mugrabi cinema in … Read entire article »

Another historic building gone

On the corner of Hayarkon Street and Gordon Street no.1, you will find today a modern 6th floor apartment building, just finished a few weeks ago. On this spot stood once a historic building, not as much for his architecture but his occupants. The place was familar to all ‘jekkes’ (Jews of German origin) from Ben-Jehoeda-’strasse’. It was a place of pilgrimage. The first ‘Jungian temple’ (Carl Jung) in the ‘holy land’, established by Erich Neumann and his wife, Julia. Erich Neumann, born in Berlin in 1905, who was considered one of the greatest psychological theoreticans of the 20th century, was the disciple and scientific heir of Carl Gustav Jung; he was anointed as such by Jung himself. Neumann’s students in Israel and everywhere view him, today, as Jung’s crown … Read entire article »

Tel Aviv Centennial Picture – part 3

The surrounding festivities at the old ‘Manshia’ train station today, April 17th, were just wonderful. Actors were dressed-up in clothes of the beginning of 1900, there were free ‘Gazoos‘ drinks (soda with a very sweet syrup), old Jazz music and of course a speech by mayor Ron Huldai. Also good-old ‘Chich‘ (Shlomo Lahat) was at the party. He was mayor of Tel Aviv from 1974 until 1993. … Read entire article »

Tel Aviv Centennial Picture – part 2

Abraham Soskin‘s photo, which documented the famous seashell lottery on April 11th,1909, has become an emblem of Tel Aviv’s mythology and history. It was wonderful to see today, April 17th,2009, all the descendants families, some nearly 90 years old, some still small babies. Everywhere people took group pictures and the largest descendants family came to the old Yafo train-station with 135 family-members!! Some families had pictures on them from their great-grandparents (the founders) some made special T-shirts (of the famous Gymnasium Herzliya). [edit: The Tel Aviv Centennial Photo Series are here: (1, 2 & 3)] … Read entire article »

Tel Aviv Centennial Picture – part 1

Today, April 17th, thousands of descendants of the 66 family-founders of Tel-Aviv (1909) flocked the old ‘Manisha’ train-station, built at the end of the 19th century on the border of Neve-Tsedek (it connected Yafo with Jerusalem). Today the site comprises more then 20 renovated buildings surrounded by landscaped lawns, and will include boutique shops, cafes and restaurants. One of the descendants of the Sirkis-family showed me a rare object: an invitation from March 1959 for the 50 year celebration of Tel Aviv, his grandfather (one of the founders of Tel Aviv) received from the municipality. Within the invitation was a copy of the original picture, taken by Avraham Soskin on April 11th 1909 (the sea-shell lottery) and two entry-tickets for the celebration. His grandfather didn’t visit the evening, because the entry-strips … Read entire article »

Official opening ceremony at Bialik-square

Thursday-evening, April 2nd there were more then 1.000 guests (Corps Diplomatique, mayors from around the world, officials from the muncipalty of Tel Aviv) invited for the official opening of centennial events. The festive was hold in front of the ‘old’ city hall. The building was designed, as a hotel, by Moshe Cherner in 1928, but it became the first city-hall until 1964. Second day of the Centennial Conference

The second day of the ‘centennial conference on urban sustainability’ (April 2nd) at the Tapac-center, started with a lecture by Dutch (! ;-) ) architect Jacob van Rijs (MVRDV), about a masterplan in the Olympiakwartier (Olympia district) in Lelystad, which introduces a new urban density and variety into the city. After his lectures there was a panel of city heads , mayors from different cities around the world. I spotted a ‘special’ guest this day: architect and ex-municipal engineer Israel Godevitch. Godevich had a short period within the muncipality; he resigned in November 1999, after some ‘improper procedure’. Yes, it is true: Godevich had a big mouth; yes is it is true: Godevich wasn’t an easy person to work with, but Godevich had great visions, some realistic, some utopian , but you can say … Read entire article »
