Historic Cinema Tel Aviv is gone…
The Cinema Tel Aviv, build in 1958, in the Pinsker Street, near Dizengoff Square, was destroyed last week. Another historic building is gone… On the same spot will the 18 floors Tel Aviv Cinema Tower arise (building cost $100 million). The Cinema Tel Aviv was famous for his thick red carpet and the ‘iron curtain’… It was Hollywood in Tel Aviv !! What a shame :( … Read entire article »

Sneak preview of Another World
Just came back yesterday evening from a sneak-preview of Another World, Israel’s first post apocalyptic action/horror film, directed by Eitan Reuven. They screened the so called Hangar scene.. Jaffa, a family-melodrama
The new feature Jaffa (Kalat Hayam), directed by Keren Yedaya, is screened, since last Saturday, in cinema’s all over Israel. It is Keren’s second feature. In this melodrama Mali Wolf , a Jewish girl has an secret affair with Toufik, an Arab boy from Jaffa. Mali is pregenant and they intend to go to Cyprus and get married… The plan is disrupted and the story starts to unfold… The main-cast in this powerfull drama are: Dany Ivgy, Moni Moshonov, Ronit Elkabetz, Mahmoud Shalaby, Lily Ivgy and Hussein Mahaine. Ajami, the Arab-Jewish Neighborhood
Yesterday, during a bright sunny day, I visited the beautiful Ajami-neighborhood. Towards the end of the 19th century the Ajami neighborhood , stretching south of ‘Old-Jaffa’ started to be built. In the beginning of the 20th century hundreds of families, mainly Christian-Arabs, settled in Ajami. After 1948, a large Arab population from different parts of the country moved into the fast growing neighborhood, together with new Jewish immigrants from the Balkans and North-Africa. In the 1950s the Municipality of then Tel Aviv-Jaffa came with a foolish-plan to transform Ajami to a modern neighborhood. Many beautiful old homes were destroyed and a large part of the population (Arab and Jewish!) were forced (!) to leave their homes. YES!! We did it again: AJAMI
This is the 3rd time (!) in a row that an Israeli Movie (Beaufort, 2008; Waltz with Bashir in 2009) is one of the 5 nominees at the Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film. This afternoon, it was announced in L.A. that: AJAMI, directed by Scandar Copti and Yaron Shani was nominated for an Oscar on March 7th, 2010. Ajami is a neighborhood in Jaffa and all the cast or non-proffesionals and inhabitants of Jaffa.
