Dutch architects and engineers visiting Tel Aviv

Last Thursday, June  2nd, 61 Dutch architects and engineers did visit our city Tel Aviv. The 6-days Dutch Architecture Israel Excursion was organized by Ton Voets (Cultuurreizen.tv in Delft, Holland).   I took 31 people from the group and showed them historic Tel Aviv (1909-1938). In the 3-hours walk of the inner-city of Tel Aviv, they saw Neo-Romantic, Eclectic and Bauhaus, or Internationale Style architecture. In the inner-city of Tel Aviv (since June … Read entire article »

More supporters: Never destroy a historic building

I did found this most interesting article in the Ha’aretz newspaper about the preservation of historic buildings in the city. As the frequent readers of Tel Aviv Fever will know, we support restoration and renovation projects in the inner-city for 100% and are fully against a destruction of an (important) historic building. An historic building is a part of the culture and history of the city, never destroy it! … Read entire article »

Our Tel Aviv Fever website in The Jerusalem Post

Last Friday, Hannah Brown (for years the cinema-reviewer of the daily) mentioned our website Tel Aviv Fever in her weekly column CineFile in the Billboard Entertainment Guide of April 2nd. (a Friday Magazine of the Post). She wrote: “…Finally, you’ve seen the movie Ajami, and now you can tour the neighborhood for which the film was named. Frits de Wit, an expert on Tel Aviv history and architecture who has been living in the White City for over 20 years, conducts walking tours of Ajami. On his tours, he explans the history of the area, from early in the last century and up trough recent years. To get more information or to book a trip, check out De Wit’s website [in fact a joined effort of the two editors - ed.] , … Read entire article »

Ancient building found in TLV region

Okay, it is nothing Jurrasic, but still some years ago… Archeologists did find the remains of a three-room building on the banks of the Yarkon River in the Tel Aviv region. The building is dated and is between 7800 and 8400 years old, the Israel Antiquities Authority tells us. [sources: Bloomberg and Ha'aretz] … Read entire article »

Tel Aviv is burning

No, there is no need to call the fire department, but if you have been here in Tel Aviv the last few weeks, you probably have felt that hell came down to visit. This Friday noon I hang out with a friend in Neve Tzedek. I’m used to the fact that in summer there is less traffic  (Israeli’s do travel), but both me and my friend were a little surprised to see only a small amount of people in the streets, many of them being French tourists. Even the  coffee shops were not very occupied. It seems that we, the rough and tough Israelis were defeated by the sun. So, if you are like me, a sweat hater, here are some ideas for cool hiding places (sorry, malls are not here … Read entire article »

The Pollack House on Herzl Street

Herewith some pictures (July 17th 2009) from the Pollack House (1910) on Herzl Street no. 1. In this building was the studio of Avraham Soskin (1881- 1963). Thanks to him we have photo archives of the early history of Tel Aviv. His most famous picture is of course: the seashell lottery, 3 km north of Yafo on April 11th 1909. I think it is time that the Municipality of Tel Aviv start to honor her most famous photographer and start to restore the building and re-open his studio as a museum! … Read entire article »

My own private Tel Aviv

Gideon Levy wrote a wonderful story in Ha’aretz (“My own private Tel Aviv”) about his childhood memories at Stand Street. “..I was sent to Meir’s to buy half a loaf of bread on credit; at Shaul’s I bought cartridges for our soda syphon. Both places had barrels of hering – I can smell them now……” … Read entire article »

Bauhaus Tel Aviv, an architectural Guide

A handy architectural guide (16×16 cm) was published by Batsford, England: ‘Bauhaus Tel Aviv: an architectural guide’ by the Israeli architect Nahoum Cohen. In 276 pages Nahoum Cohen will take you through the history of the Bauhaus architecture of Tel Aviv (housing, public buildings, new and renewed buildings). The guide is only in English and written for the (architectural) tourist, who is coming to Tel Aviv. So, it is quite strange, that you ‘want’ find a city-map inside the booklet, were you will find the buildings mentioned by Nahoum Cohen. Price: NIS90 … Read entire article »

The Centennial Stamp

A festive stamp created by the Israel Postal Authority for the opening of the centennial year combines the three colors that represent Tel Aviv: white, blue and green. Each color reflects a different facet of the urban mosaic of the city: white corresponds with Tel Aviv’s historical and cultural legacy (the White City architecture); blue represents Tel Aviv’s character as a city by the sea and green echoes the greenery and nature which have always been essential to the city. The stamp was designed by Moshe Peleg. … Read entire article »
