Dutch architects and engineers visiting Tel Aviv

Dutch architects and engineers visiting Tel Aviv

Last Thursday, June  2nd, 61 Dutch architects and engineers did visit our city Tel Aviv. The 6-days Dutch Architecture Israel Excursion was organized by Ton Voets (Cultuurreizen.tv in Delft, Holland).   I took 31 people from the group and showed them historic Tel Aviv (1909-1938). In the 3-hours walk of the inner-city of Tel Aviv, they saw Neo-Romantic, Eclectic and Bauhaus, or Internationale Style architecture. In the inner-city of Tel Aviv (since June … Read entire article »

More supporters: Never destroy a historic building

I did found this most interesting article in the Ha’aretz newspaper about the preservation of historic buildings in the city. As the frequent readers of Tel Aviv Fever will know, we support restoration and renovation projects in the inner-city for 100% and are fully against a destruction of an (important) historic building. An historic building is a part of the culture and history of the city, never destroy it! … Read entire article »

Historic Cinema Tel Aviv is gone…

The  Cinema Tel Aviv, build in 1958, in the Pinsker Street, near Dizengoff Square, was destroyed last week. Another historic building is gone… On the same spot will the 18 floors Tel Aviv Cinema Tower arise (building cost $100 million). The Cinema Tel Aviv was famous for his thick red carpet and the ‘iron curtain’… It was Hollywood in Tel Aviv !! What a shame :( … Read entire article »

Walking with Irgoen Oleh Holland

On Friday 6th and 13th of November, I took a group (64 people all together) of Irgoen Oleh Holland (The Dutch new immigrant organization) for a walking tour of historic Tel Aviv: the architecture in the Neo-Classic, Neo-Romantic, Eclectic and Bauhaus or International Style. At the end of the 3 hours tour, the group received a light lunch at the first kiosk of Tel Aviv (1909), now restored at the corner of Herzl Street and Rothschild Boulevard. … Read entire article »

The Three Routes of Tel Aviv

As the Centennial Year draws to an end, one of its most special projects will be introduced in a weekend of walking tours…the so called Three Routes will be officially inaugurated on October 30th and 31st. The Three Routes are special walking trails which tell the story of the city trough three distinguishing colors: White, Blue and Green. The White Route goes through the White City and historic Tel Aviv. The Blue Route runs along the city’s coastline. The Green Route follows the Yarkon River and Ganei-Yehoshua. Each route includes key stations that highlight important sites and prominent inhibitants. The stations are marked by special solar-tiles (!). Information about each station can be heard through any cellular device (!) by dialing: 054-4004414 and pressing the route and station number. To download the maps of the routes … Read entire article »

Bauhaus-building sold for $2million

A Bauhaus-building (1936) in the Yehuda Halevie Street was sold yesterday to a privat investor for NIS 7.3 million ($2 million). The structure, 4 stories-high,was build on a land measuring 280 square meters. It was owned by an offshoot of one of the founders of the famous Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem. The new owner said that he will restore the historic building and add an other floor on it (costs: $1 million). … Read entire article »

Why add an upper-floor??

On the Ben Yehuda Street no. 8 you find a beautiful building, designed in the Eclectic-style in 1926 by Joseph Berlin. The building was in a bad state and restored (real nice) in 1998…but then the restoration/renovation architect got a black-out!! He added a glass-upper floor on this historic building, totally destroying the design of Joseph Berlin. I can’t understand this urge from some of the Israeli restoration ‘architects’ to add upper glass-floors or glass-curtain walls on top of historical buildings. Did they ever heard (or – preferably – learned) about the word aesthetic?? … Read entire article »

Nearly restored…the third kiosk

There are historic places gone soon (see pictures item before of the old Tel-Aviv Central busstation), but at another place in the city, they are restoring an old, historic site: the 3rd ‘kiosk’ of Tel Aviv (corner Rothschild Boulevard and Allenby Street) will be in a few days as NEW. [see the former state at Tel Aviv Fever: HERE] … Read entire article »

Good old Astor Hotel to be demolished

The cosy, ‘small’ (60 rooms) Astor Hotel (build in the 50s) on the corner of HaYarkon- and Frishman Street will be demolished after long court battles. The four-star six storey seafront Astor hotel has ‘to go’ for a 22 (!!) storey hotel with 161 rooms. Another historic, charming place will be gone :-( … Read entire article »

Renovation a matter of taste?

From where do this restoration/renovation architects in Tel-Aviv (at least a part of them) received this horrible ‘ taste’?? On the Ben-Jehuda Street no. 8, you will find the famous Hershberg House, designed in 1926 by Joseph Berlin. Berlin was born in 1877 in the Ukraine. He studied architecture in Odessa and in St.Petersburg. He emigrated to Palestine in 1921. His early buildings are largely in silicate stone and reminicent of Berlage‘s, the Dutch architect from Amsterdam (!), brick buildings. In 1998/99 the  Hershberg House was restored and the restoration architect thought it was ‘proper’ to add an aluminium floor on top of this historic building. A ‘matter of taste”. … Read entire article »

Back to school…

A horrible example of so called restoration/renovation work, you will find in the Levotine Street (a side-street of Allenbey): The ‘Generali’ building, designed in 1928. In 1995, the architect Cahana (after restoring the old building) added a large block of aluminium on top of this historic building…it just looks disgusting. Mr. Cahana, I have a ‘tip’ for you: at Delft University of Technology (TUDelft, Netherlands) they teach about restoration/renovation and ethics: maybe it is time, you start your study all over again? … Read entire article »
