In the beginning of 2000 ‘Allenby 58′ was the place to be: a groundbreaking club, with the best dj’s of the world. Years before it was known as the ‘Rimon Cinema’. It started all in 1930 when architect Shlomo Gepstein was commissioned a plan to design a three-storey block of flats on a plot at Allenby 58. Plans changed and in 1932 a cinema was build. The  Cinema Tel Aviv, build in 1958, in the Pinsker Street, near Dizengoff Square, was destroyed last week. Another historic building is gone… On the same spot will the 18 floors Tel Aviv Cinema Tower arise (building cost $100 million). Jaffa, a family-melodrama

The new feature Jaffa (Kalat Hayam), directed by Keren Yedaya, is screened, since last Saturday, in cinema’s all over Israel. It is Keren’s second feature. In this melodrama Mali Wolf , a Jewish girl has an secret affair with Toufik, an Arab boy from Jaffa. Mali is pregenant and they intend to go to Cyprus and get married… The plan is disrupted and the story starts to unfold… The main-cast in this powerfull drama are: Dany Ivgy, Moni Moshonov, Ronit Elkabetz, Mahmoud Shalaby, Lily Ivgy and Hussein Mahaine. Ajami will be at the Oscars in 2010

Last night, Saturday 26th, (in Haifa) the movie Ajami, directed by Scandar Copti and Yaron Shani, took all (!!) the top-awards at the Israeli Ophir Awards ceremony. They beat their big rival Lebanon by Shmuel Maoz on all levels. Ajami about a neighborhood in Yafo, south of the Old City, received awards for: Best Screenplay, Best Music, Best Director and Best movie of 2009! Scandar, Yaron and the rest of the cast and crew: Mazzal Tov! Ajami will represent the Israeli cinema, next year, at the Oscars. … Read entire article »

Ajami at the cinemas

The movie Ajami directed by Scandor Copti and Yaron Shani will be screened from today, Saturday September 19th, in cinema’s all over Israel. The movie, about a neighborhood in Yafo, received an “honorable mention” at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival.
