Ajami, the Arab-Jewish Neighborhood
Yesterday, during a bright sunny day, I visited the beautiful Ajami-neighborhood. Towards the end of the 19th century the Ajami neighborhood , stretching south of ‘Old-Jaffa’ started to be built. In the beginning of the 20th century hundreds of families, mainly Christian-Arabs, settled in Ajami. After 1948, a large Arab population from different parts of the country moved into the fast growing neighborhood, together with new Jewish immigrants from the Balkans and North-Africa. In the 1950s the Municipality of then Tel Aviv-Jaffa came with a foolish-plan to transform Ajami to a modern neighborhood. Many beautiful old homes were destroyed and a large part of the population (Arab and Jewish!) were forced (!) to leave their homes. The neighborhood conditions drastically and quickly deteriorated, while no modern infrastructure was build. Beside, … Read entire article »

An other landmark in Tel Aviv destroyed?
The last few months, we wrote a few items about the rape of our Habima theater building by Ram Karmi. But the Municipality of Tel Aviv has no limits at all. A few weeks ago, they agreed to a plan to destroy an other famous Tel-Aviv landmark: The Asia House in Weizmann Street 4, designed in 1960 by Ben Horin. This beautiful shaped building was a relief for a lot of architecture-lovers after a long period of Brutal style architecture (concrete, concrete, concrete!). The new owner of the building is Alfred Akirov… He build, the last few years towers all over the center of Tel Aviv, e.g. destroying the Rotschild Boulevard with this large ugly steel and glass monsters. The new plans for the Asia House are just unbelievable: a 12-stories … Read entire article »

Window shopping on Dizengoff
An article, full of nostalgia, I found in the Jerusalem Post, friday June 26th, written by Bracha Stock: “Window shopping on Dizengoff”. This was the ‘good old days’ without (!) this ugly small viaduct they build (in the 70s) over the once most beautiful (and only square in the world designed completely in the Internationale Style!!) square in Tel Aviv, with a fountain in the middle. An other assault on a historic place in Tel-Aviv!! … Read entire article »

“A little help from ‘some’ friends…..”
Herewith a picture of a Bauhaus building (1934) in the Frishman Street no.22. The building needs badly a restoration : as you can see, during the years the inhabitants of the building, closed some of the balconies (extra-room) and did put ugly, plastic sun-shades on the top-floor. The design is a truly beautiful ‘International Style’ … To renovated this building, we just need: A little help from ‘some’ friends… … Read entire article »

Our editor Frits in the media again: Dutch radio
Flavius, a Dutch ‘current historic magazine’ of the Joodse Omroep (Jewish Broadcasting Company), has made a radio report a few weeks ago with Tel Aviv Fever editor Frits de Wit. It will be broadcasted in The Netherlands (Dutch only) and will be available online after the broadcast: Radio 5, Sunday May 31st, 19:30-20:30 local time. Maybe we’ll be able to make you a (shortened?) transcript. The for us most important two subjects are on Tel Aviv and Tel Aviv Only: Frits is touring the reporter through Tel Aviv and talking about architecture and Bauhaus architecture particulary and architect Herman Hertzberger talks about his not realized development plans for Tel Aviv. That is what Frits says all the time: “Tel Aviv architecture is way cool!” … Read entire article »
