Last Thursday-evening 98 minutes documentary The Flat, directed by Arnon Goldfinger received the Award for Best Documentary at the Ophir Awards 2011 (the ‘Israeli Oscars’). It is the story about the grandparents of Arnon, who were living on the 3rd. floor of a Bauhaus building at 31, Gordon Street in Tel Aviv.
Arnon says about his documentary: “…My grandparents lived on the 3rd. floor since 1935, when they immigrated to Palestine. The flat was furnished with heavy European pieces, with the best of German literature and laden with layers of dust and history. Objects, pictures, letters and documents awaited us after my grandmother died at the age of 98, revealing the complex lives of my grandparents Gerda and Kurt Tuchler, as well as traces of a troubled and painful past”.
The film develops into a riveting adventure and even reveals some secrets that should have probably remained untold.

The documentary, that had its world-premiere at the 61st. Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale 2011), is a personal story about his family, his strong mother, his father who divorced after 33 years of marriage and his four brothers (three of them left for the USA).
Tomer combines in his documentary 8 and 16 mm footage with his own work of a decade.
After the screening of the documentary, there will be a special Q&A-session with Noa Heymann, the mother of Tomer and with: Noga Heymann, Tomer’s niece, who will arrive all the way from Oregon (USA) to answer questions…

Tel Aviv Fever editor Ed Hofschreuder was asked to provide photo’s of Tel Aviv to illustrate an article about the Israel/Tel Aviv experience of Dutch Playboy Magazine editor Jan Heemskerk, chief editor Marcel Langedijk and friend Joel Fresco under the title: “Playboy’s Wild Weekends”
It is a fun story with mixed feelings of the three, but the overall question, “Is Israel no fun?” is answered in the article: “Are you crazy? Israel is fantastic. They are only a bit fanatic about security.” Which is by the way, explained further in the article. ;-)

The bad boys visited very good and expensive restaurants, clubs, a stripclub in Tel Aviv, some other parts of Israel, including Jerusalem, but loved to get back to Tel Aviv. And this is what we wanted to hear! ;-)
The article ends with “That Israel, do it, how strange that may sound!”
As a thank you Tel Aviv Fever was mentioned as only Tel Aviv site ...

While walking to the Cinemateque Tel Aviv to see the rewarded movie I Shot My Love, we walked by a restaurant where the people were waiting in line to get a table. This was nothing new, but the place looked nice, so it glued to our memory.
A week later we tried to eat something somewhere with our friend Michal. After trying some other places we accidentaly got to the same place that we passed last time, the Giraffe Noodle Bar at Ibn Givrol. It happened to have place for us outside…
We got the menu and asked for a English or at least European version. The waitress told us they didn’t have it. We were quite surprised, but our table companion decided to translate big parts of the menu for us from Hebrew to English. [toda raba, Michal!]
Her black noodles with seafood, my brothers noodles with fish and meat and my vegetarian noodles ...

And there is a lot of material which is refreshed every day.
When we were there they answered our questions in the most friendly way, not knowing we were the editors of Tel Aviv Fever ;-) And even switched to Italian for other visitors (this may not always be the case ;-) ).
You will find the Information Center at Herbert Samuel Boulevard 46. This is close to the coast line. Follow Allenby Street to close to the beach. There you will find the roundabout with the fountain in front of the pink ...

I love cycling, I love Tel Aviv, but the combination of the two is a bit complicated. Being in Tel Aviv for two great weeks again made me realize that cyclist in Tel Aviv are the Kings of the Pavement. Okay, at least, this is what they think…
With high speed, with ringing bells, getting mad and having no respect for pedestrians they rule the pavement as their kingdom. This is quite an experience. As a Dutchman I am used to lots, and I mean LOTS of bikes, but this is really the bl..dy limit…
I do understand that it is not easy and safe to drive their bikes on the roadway, but I think the pavement is for pedestrians and they are therefore TOP DOG. Cyclist are nothing more then a welcome guest on that part of the ways (as they need a safe harbour also ;-) ) , but they need ...

Something that caught my eye and brain is that there are so many dogs in Tel Aviv now… And their owners are in the age of more or little after military service….
Would it be instead of kids or just as in-between? ;)
I was pleasantly surprised about the fact that the streets are still so clean. I see quite some dogs (sorry: dog owners) that need some lessons, but there is almost no dog stuff on the street.
Well done!
(or did I miss something? ;-) If so, please tell me!)

The Tel Aviv Museum of Art will host another ‘society‘ wedding on its premises this month. It looks like that the museum-director prof. Mordechai Omer is using the museum the last few month as a private ‘playground’ for his elite-friends. Seven month ago he used the museum for the wedding of Erez Navon, the son of former president Yitzhak Navon (rent for the space was $25.000 ) and this month, January 25th, the wedding will take place of the daughter of Hanina Brandes (law firm Naschitz Brandes). I understand that the museum is using his premises for video-art parties, jazz-concerts e.g.: we are talking about art!! But what has a ‘society’ wedding to do with art? During the last wedding the museum closed its doors to the public hours earlier than usual.
What do you think?
