“We are a free city and everybody can be proud of it”… was the reaction this afternoon of mayor Ron Huldai of Tel Aviv-Yafo, during a trip with a closed bus (the planning was an open top bus, but it kept raining this afternoon in Tel Aviv – unique ;-) ) after the awesome news this morning that in a competition of American Airlines the city of Tel Aviv was declared the Best of Gay Cities 2011..

The Municipality of Tel Aviv-Yafo will spent another NIS150 million (30 million euro) in the next five years on building 150 km of new bike-lanes in the city. Fourteen years ago, Tel Aviv did not have even one bicycle path. As for today the city has more then 100 kilometers of paths, trails and lanes. According to a 2010 municipal poll, 38 percent of Tel Aviv residents own a bicycle.
The now familair green bikes in the city (the rental program Tel-O-Fan began last spring) have logged more then 280.000 (!) seperate rides. In the light of this enormous success (and therefore high demand) Tel-O-Fan will install 50 additional stations (with 500 more bicycles) around the city this year.
Another great effort by the Municipality of Tel Aviv-Yafo, because everybody, who is walking the streets of Tel Aviv this days, knows that more bike-lanes are needed asap.

Yesterday, the first Tel Aviv Fashion Week (after 30 years) opened with dozens of shows, events and a special guest: the famous Italian designer Roberto Cavalli. The Fashion Week is taking place at the beautifully restored Tachana compound (the old Jaffa trainstation) between Jaffa and Neve-Tsedek.
Let’s bring Tel Aviv back to the fashion capital of the Middle-East!

Another great move by the Tel Aviv Municipality: they announced this week that it plans to roll out free wireless internet in parks, boulevards, commercial districts and beaches throughout the city in 2012. Among many others, free wireless Internet (wifi) service is planned to strech along the length of Dizengoff, Ben-Yehuda and Ibn Gvirol Streets, and Ben Gurion, Nordau, Rothschild and Yerusalayim Boulevards, along the beach, starting from Jaffa/Yafo.
Ron: You did it again!!

The Slideluck Potshow is a New-York based, non-profit arts organization, that provides an opportunity for artists and art-appreciaters to gather around food, friends and artwork. The event, which began in a Seattle background, over ten years ago, draws now a crowd of a thousand in NYC.
At the Tel Aviv event 20 local and Israeli related artists showed their work for a packed house.
It was also a ‘goodbye party’ for American art-installation photographer Spencer Tunick. At the slideshow we saw pictures of his art-shoots around the globe (e.g. the shoot in Amsterdam in 2003). We also saw the first stills of Spencer’s shoot at the Dead Sea ...

Last Saturday afternoon I did visit an afternoon-party at the Shampina Bar on Rothschild Boulevard 32. The place was crowded and swinging with the ‘to be seen folks’ of Tel Aviv.
You will find the Shampina in the once Ben Nahum Hotel, the beautiful building with this special roof-top on the corner of Rothschild Boulevard and Allenby Street, designed in 1921 by Judah Magidovitch, Tel Aviv’s first city engineer. Last September restoration works started on the building and while the Tel Aviv crowd enjoys the bar at the groundfloor, restoration-work is still going on at the upper floors.
