Viva Tel Aviv…
A nice PR-article for Tel Aviv, I did find in TheJC.com, October 15th, 2009, written by Jenni Frazer: Viva Tel-Aviv, A City of Endless Reinvention… She writes: “One of the joys of Tel Aviv is that you never quite know what you will see when you turn a corner…” … Read entire article »
Larissa Riahi received the 2nd Tel Aviv Fever Heineken bottle
As we wrote on July the 8th, we made 6 Tel Aviv Fever Heineken bottles (3 are in Israel, 3 in Holland). The first one went to Eytan Schwartz, the ‘big guy’ of all the Centennial events. Our second bottle we gave to: Larissa Riahi. She is original from Amiens (France), studied graphic design. In 2000 she came for six month to a kibbutz as a volunteer. Back in France she studied Art. She missed the life in Israel and she decided in 2005 to make ‘aliyah’ (permanent resident), not for political or religious reasons, just because the love for Israel. Tel Aviv would be here ‘new’ town. She loves art (painting and clay works), music and her openness brings her to meet different cultures and people. At this moment … Read entire article »
Highrise towers in Neve-Tsedek
I am very ‘happy’ with the article by Raz Smolsky and Guy Liberman: “The towers of Tel Aviv” in Ha’aretz (June the 5th). It was time that also the daily newspapers in Israel would write about those ugly highrise around the beautiful neighborhood of Neve-Tsedek. Those ‘empty‘ towers are build for the rich French and Americans, who will ‘visit‘ their million $ apartments during the Jewish holidays. It is a crying shame: they are building a ‘wall‘ around Neve-Tsedek!!! Maybe, this time we can stop them?! Inhabitants of Neve-Tsedek tried before, even in long court battles…so, for those new ugly plans by the Municpality of Tel Aviv, we should start again a strong grass-roots movement(!!) : “Save Neve-Tsedek, Stop those ugly high-rise!!” … Read entire article »

Good old Astor Hotel to be demolished
The cosy, ‘small’ (60 rooms) Astor Hotel (build in the 50s) on the corner of HaYarkon- and Frishman Street will be demolished after long court battles. The four-star six storey seafront Astor hotel has ‘to go’ for a 22 (!!) storey hotel with 161 rooms. Another historic, charming place will be gone :-( … Read entire article »

Our editor Frits in the media again: Dutch radio
Flavius, a Dutch ‘current historic magazine’ of the Joodse Omroep (Jewish Broadcasting Company), has made a radio report a few weeks ago with Tel Aviv Fever editor Frits de Wit. It will be broadcasted in The Netherlands (Dutch only) and will be available online after the broadcast: Radio 5, Sunday May 31st, 19:30-20:30 local time. Maybe we’ll be able to make you a (shortened?) transcript. The for us most important two subjects are on Tel Aviv and Tel Aviv Only: Frits is touring the reporter through Tel Aviv and talking about architecture and Bauhaus architecture particulary and architect Herman Hertzberger talks about his not realized development plans for Tel Aviv. That is what Frits says all the time: “Tel Aviv architecture is way cool!” … Read entire article »

What about the UNESCO protection of our inner-city?
On the corner of Rotschild Boulevard and Allenbey Street is a big building-site at this moment. On this spot will arise an other, ugly high-rise tower: the so called ‘The Meir on Rotschild Tower’ designed by the American architect: Richard Meir. Unit prices in the 27 floor high tower will start (!) at 1.3 million Euro. ‘If I am not wrong’, this spot is within the inner-city of Tel Aviv, protected by the UNESCO as a World Heritage site? (since July 2003) … Read entire article »

Mayor Ron Huldai in ‘Meet the Press’
HOT NEWS: I just watched, a few minutes ago on Channel 22 (17:45 – 18:30) mayor Ron Huldai in ‘Meet the Press’. Some main points: On the question how he feels today (Ron was born in kibbutz Hulda, near Rehovot): “I always be proud to be born in kibbutz Hulda, but today I am a Telavivian.” About the large budget for the Centennial celebrations and the expensive show on Rabin-Square, April 4th: “There was a free entrance on Rabin Square; more then 200.000 people were there that evening…that is NIS 20.- a person…so what’s the problem??” About Yafo: “I see it as one of my main task, to bring Tel Aviv and Yafo more close together in all different ways” About, that he made Tel Aviv a place only for the rich: “Not true, only 7% of … Read entire article »

Meir Dizengoff: first mayor of Tel-Aviv
“The houses, streets and parks are merely the city’s facade. But its soul and spirit, character and nature, lie within its citizens’ aspirations to build and create, their love and freedom and their great faith in the future of the nation. These are the virtues that encouraged and drove the first founders of Tel Aviv to create a city in the Land of Israel” Meir Dizengoff, first mayor of Tel-Aviv: 1922-1925 1929-1936 … Read entire article »
