Another boutique hotel for Tel Aviv?
Rumors going around that the former Ismailov Hotel at Montefiori Street no. 32 will be restored and rebuild inside as a boutique hotel. The beautiful and large Ismailov Hotel, now many, many years standing empty, was designed by Judah Magidovich in 1925. Magidovich, born in 1886 in Uman (Ukraine) emigrated to Palestine in 1919 were he worked as the first City Engineer of Tel Aviv. He designed more then 500(!) buildings for the city. Up against the wall
Three years ago, I wrote on my FaceBook Page: Architecture of Tel-Aviv 1909-1938 about the destructive restauration/renovation plans of the Municipality of Tel Aviv for our national theater: Habima (at the end of Rothschild Boulevard) designed in 1934 by Oscar Kaufmann. Also on our website Tel Aviv Fever, we wrote the last three month a few articles (here and here ) about the ‘rape‘ of Habima. The so called restoration architect Ram Karmi is building a concrete monster (he added two concrete floors) and the front of Habima (all green glass) will be like a shopping-mall. This weekend in the Haaretz-Magazine there was (the neighborhoud started to be awake!) a long article about this culture-crime of Habima, written by Yossi Klein. Dvir Gallery opens new spacious site in Jaffa Port
On Tuesday, September 8th at 18:00 will be the official opening of a new space by the famous Dvir Gallery in the old Jaffa Port (Hangar 2). The opening-solo show will be by the artist Douglas Gordon. This is the 3rd time that Gordon will show his art-work for Dvir Gallery (in 1988 and in 2008). This time at the new space of the gallery, Gordon wil present a selection of the large-scale video projections made for his 2008 retrospective in Avignon, France. The installation is especially adapted to the gallery’s spacious new site.
