Tel Aviv is burning
No, there is no need to call the fire department, but if you have been here in Tel Aviv the last few weeks, you probably have felt that hell came down to visit.
This Friday noon I hang out with a friend in Neve Tzedek. I’m used to the fact that in summer there is less traffic (Israeli’s do travel), but both me and my friend were a little surprised to see only a small amount of people in the streets, many of them being French tourists. Even the coffee shops were not very occupied. It seems that we, the rough and tough Israelis were defeated by the sun. So, if you are like me, a sweat hater, here are some ideas for cool hiding places (sorry, malls are not here because dozens of screaming kids and desperate parents are not my idea of relaxing fun ;-) ).
The Tel Aviv Museum presents touring the museum exhibitions (in Hebrew) “Summer Pieces: Between Painting and Photography” It’ll take place in August 19th and 25th at 11:30. You can also have nice, simple and not expensive lunch there.
In the Eretz Israel Museum, you will find “The Secret History of Tel Aviv: 20.000 Years of Hidden Sights”. A journey back in time to the city’s distant history, sites which have been discovered under the houses of TLV. (They have buildings too! ;-) )
Another great place to hide is the library. Yes, the library! I know, books are not ‘in’, nor ‘cool’ nowadays, but if you do like the imaginary world of the written word, this is your place (the big one is Beit Ariela. Hebrew HERE). Music lovers can relax in the music library (it includes thousands of CD’s and DVD’s).
Between the 19th and 22nd of August the Cinemateque presents the Animation, Comics & Caricature Festival. Even if you’re not a fan, a comfortable chair and strong air-conditioning might worth becoming one.
If after all this you still suffer, cannot find yourself or still dreaming about cooler streets… Go to the Netherlands… ;-)
