White Night at ShenArt
In the charming gallery ShenArt (Frishman 21) Nadia and Stephane had their first White Night. Two month ago they opened the place, arriving from a small, lovely (channeled) town in the Netherlands (Holland), called Haarlem. Nadia makes small exotic sculptures and Stephane is working with vinyl art, putting (for the first time) his art-work on canvases. The lovely couple decided that they would be different from all the art galleries in-and- around Gordon Street. They will have an ‘open‘ gallery, inviting the people to come in, have a chat about art, enjoy a cold beer and they hope to get new ideas (or suggestions) about a new topic for their own artwork. The slogan in ShenArt is: interaction!! The place has to be for everybody who is intested in art: so … Read entire article »

The ‘Yekkes’ in Tel Aviv
A charming article I found yesterday in the Metro (Jerusalem Post, May 28th/2009) about the ‘Yekkes’ of Tel Aviv, written by Bracha Stork. Yekkes was the nick-name for the Jews from German origin. (always, even during hot summer days, with their suits, ‘jacket’, on!!). Until today, you will find them in the small cafe-shops around Ben-Gurionstreet, still talking German ;-) [via Jerusalem Post Online] … Read entire article »
Good old Astor Hotel to be demolished
The cosy, ‘small’ (60 rooms) Astor Hotel (build in the 50s) on the corner of HaYarkon- and Frishman Street will be demolished after long court battles. The four-star six storey seafront Astor hotel has ‘to go’ for a 22 (!!) storey hotel with 161 rooms. Another historic, charming place will be gone :-( … Read entire article »

On the rooftop of the Levine House
Last evening, at 19.30, there was a small VIP ceremony for the opening of the White Night Celebrations on the roof of the just (for the 2nd time) restored Beth Levine (The Levine House) at Rothschild Boulevard no.46. Among the guests the Deputy Mayor of Paris, Christophe Girard. It was Girard who started in 2003 (then Deputy of Culture of the Municipality of Paris) with the first White Night in Europe. ‘Chamber music‘ and lots of glasses of French wine and champagne made this rooftop party a wondeful event. Meanwhile the first thousands of people flocked Rothschild Boulevard for a swinging, beautiful White evening and night. … Read entire article »

Our editor Frits in the media again: Dutch radio
Flavius, a Dutch ‘current historic magazine’ of the Joodse Omroep (Jewish Broadcasting Company), has made a radio report a few weeks ago with Tel Aviv Fever editor Frits de Wit. It will be broadcasted in The Netherlands (Dutch only) and will be available online after the broadcast: Radio 5, Sunday May 31st, 19:30-20:30 local time. Maybe we’ll be able to make you a (shortened?) transcript. The for us most important two subjects are on Tel Aviv and Tel Aviv Only: Frits is touring the reporter through Tel Aviv and talking about architecture and Bauhaus architecture particulary and architect Herman Hertzberger talks about his not realized development plans for Tel Aviv. That is what Frits says all the time: “Tel Aviv architecture is way cool!” … Read entire article »
